What Weather?
As you can see from this image of Hurricane Isabel, taken from the International Space Station, weather matters a great deal on Earth. People in the path of this storm were asked to leave low-lying areas in case of flooding. Ships had to leave port and head for open water so they wouldn't be smashed against docks by the strong winds. Businesses were closed and precautions taken to save lives and property.
Does weather matter on other worlds as well? Of course! Saturn, for example, has storms that could cover the entire Earth. So science fiction writers should always mention weather in order to write believable stories.
Or should they? Here's your challenge. Name at least three science fiction settings where a story could occur without the writer needing to talk about any weather at all.
Send your ideas to challenge@snkids.com. Please include your first name, age, city or town, and state. If you are under 13 years old, get your parent's permission to write to us. You may be eligible for a prize!
